Eighties Icon, Rewired: The Renault 5 Turbo 3E Is Here

Renault resurrects the 80s icon with the electric Renault 5 Turbo 3E – 540hp, under 3.5s to 62mph, and full retro flair.

There are some cars that shape your dreams, and for me yes there were the poster cars, Ferrari F40, Porsche 911 and so on but these seemed so far out of reach at the age of 14. So I set my sights on some stepping stones to try and get there and the 80’s Renault 5 Turbo was high up on that list . It defined what a hot hatch should be. Wild, wide-arched, unapologetic fun with rally-bred roots. I remember turning 17 in the late ‘90s, deciding right there and then, I’m having one of those along with the other 12 cars I was going to fill my underground garage with (which I still haven’t got by the way). like the Ford Escort Cosworth, Vauxhall astra GTE and the Ford Fiesta RS Turbo just to name a few.

By 18, I had my licence, some cash saved, and reality hit hard. I could just about afford a Renault 5 turbo but the insurance? Not a chance. Skip forward a few more years, the dream looked doable again, a few year no claims behind me (following a few written off cars not claimed for) and I could probably insure one but the value of these little icons started to soar. From teenage fantasy to classic car goldmine, the Renault 5 became more and more unattainable.

And now… Renault has only gone and done it. They’ve resurrected the legend. at a slightly different price point (so I still can’t afford one, but what the hell, I can still dream)

Say hello to the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a jaw-dropping electric homage that’s not just retro inspired, but radically reimagined.

From the Driver’s Seat

Would I love to throw down €50K and claim one of these? You bet. But for now, I’ll be watching from the sidelines, heart full of admiration (and a bit of jealousy). Renault hasn’t just brought back a classic — they’ve rebuilt it for a new era. Raw, rebellious, and ready for the road or track!

Well done, Renault. If your going to revive the 80s why not do it in style.
